Introduction

There is an obvious and none too subtle connection between populistic anti-Zionism and the elevation of Antisemitism to respectability in western society : from elitist conservative circles to the broad left-wing. These related social phenomena have become rooted in their idiom and from there have been imported into all educated and public dialogue, under a mantle of social acceptability. Their fabrications are also propounded by anti-globalist and anti-American lobbies (or the nationalists and anarchists, especially in France and Russia). It is fanned, too, by the deluge of antisemitic hate and hatred for Israel, emanating directly from the powerful Arab and Muslim worldwide media, and propagated through sermons, politicised non-profit bodies, and rally infrastructure in the West. This axiom is borne out not only in papers and research by specialists of international repute, such as Professor Robert Wistrich, but also by concerned intellectuals and international organizations, as can be seen from the links below.

• This roaring trade in antisemitic symbols, with its vocal rhetoric and litany of hate for Israel, has moreover found abundant exposure in this  era of media on demand. It has accessed dissemination and networked its way through groups to way beyond saturation levels, and never more so than during the Second Lebanon War. In short, the impact has been devastating.
• These diatribes are not just words, they are intrinsically related to the increase in antisemitic activity in Europe and Australia, in general. They maim and kill through their impact inside western societies, through acts of assault, grievous bodily harm, vandalism, arson, as well as  the desecration of cemeteries and synagogues.
• They also have international diplomatic consequences.

The EU Monitoring Committee's Working paper for 2006 [report ] follows up national documentation and presents a serious escalation in Antisemitism in 2006 from the watershed of the Second Lebanon War, and there is supporting literature available elsewhere.
What it does not or cannot discuss are:

• The cause and response mechanisms that are available or needed to contend with these phenomena;
• The cumulative political impact of these forces of hate at the national and international level:
• A projection of their potential consequences into the future.
  These are questions that need to be raised urgently by communal organizations to the OSCE, the EU, and local/national governments.
