The Six Day War has been designated a landmark in both Israeli and military history, but it is not easy to imagine today how crucial a turning point it marked in Israel's struggle for survival. The realities facing the 19 year old State of Israel were very grim indeed, and the decision to pre-empt an attack by the massing Arab forces saved Israel from the devastation and major loss of life that such a war could have inflicted on the country and its inhabitants.
The War also had a personal side – stories of Jerusalem under bombardment and schoolchildren being sent home to live in bomb shelters for days; stories of young soldiers; stories of reaching the Kotel, or Western Wall, and many more.
The Six Day War has had many consequences, too, and there are clear political lines marked by those who may actually know little about its realities. To judge them, one should first explore why and how it was fought, the international political context and the Middle East, and what Israel's victory contributed to Israeli security. With these foundations, discussion of the consequences and the contemporary political and international context can be addressed.
We bring below discussions, historical coverage, and maps, as well as the perspectives of time.
