Chovat Hatalmidim: Message to Teachers and Parents (32)
Still, this is not enough. For even if we successfully appeal to the child's intellect and lead him to understand that he is responsible for himself - and instill in him a desire to perform the mitzvoth - we still have to help him overcome potential emotional obstacles. As we previously noted, today's child tends to act independently before he is ripe to do so, and thus is susceptible to hollow, emotionally charged diversions such as theater and other wanton attractions. Thus - in addition to appealing to the child's intellect - we must also appeal to his emotions and arouse excitement in the performance of mitzvoth and Torah study. Without developing the emotional side, our work is meaningless, for even if the child understands his responsibility, his emotions and desires will lead him astray to a path which the child himself realizes is perfidious.
